World Cup 2026: Switzerland vs Algeria Tips, Odds & Prediction

Switzerland take on Algeria at BC Place in Vancouver on Friday, with kickoff at 05:00 CAT in this 2026 World Cup Round of 32 tie. Murat Yakin's side topped their group unbeaten and arrive fresh after rotating heavily, while Algeria scraped through as one of the best third placed teams. Switzerland

Switzerland were excellent in the group stage after a disappointing opening draw against Qatar, winning their section unbeaten with seven goals scored and only three conceded. In my opinion Yakin has the deeper and better balanced squad here, built on the midfield platform of Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler, and the fact he could rotate in the final group game after securing a big lead leaves his key men fresh. Johan Manzambi has been a real find with three goals from midfield, while Breel Embolo and Ruben Vargas carry the main attacking threat. Yakin has no fresh injury concerns to manage, so I expect close to a full strength eleven.

Predicted Lineup: Kobel; Widmer, Akanji, Elvedi, Rodriguez; Freuler, Xhaka, Aebischer; Ndoye, Embolo, Vargas.

Algeria

Algeria reached the last 32 the hard way, losing 3-0 to Argentina before beating Jordan and then drawing 3-3 with Austria in one of the games of the World Cup so far to squeeze through. From my point of view Vladimir Petkovic's team carry genuine quality in the final third through Riyad Mahrez and Amine Gouiri, and there is an added edge with Petkovic facing the country he once coached. The concern for me is their defending, which looked badly stretched in that chaotic draw with Austria. My read on this is that Algeria will create chances but leave gaps that a side as composed as Switzerland can punish.

Predicted Lineup: Benbot; Belghali, Mandi, Bensebaini, Hadjam; Aouar, Maza; Chaibi, Bentaleb, Mahrez; Gouiri.

Switzerland have the stronger squad, the better balance and a settled system, and I expect them to control the tempo through Xhaka and Freuler. Algeria will threaten in spells, but I think the Swiss defence does enough to keep them out while taking their own chances. I am backing a measured Swiss win to nil. My forecast: Switzerland 2 Algeria 0.

I am backing under 2.5 goals and my read on this is that Switzerland will manage this game rather than blow it open. The Swiss conceded only three times in the group and tend to control matches without taking risks, while Algeria's best route is on the counter rather than an open shootout. With a knockout place on the line I expect a controlled, low scoring affair.
