Ivory Coast and Ecuador open Group E at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, with kickoff at 01:00 CAT in the early hours of Monday. These are the two teams likely to be fighting for a spot in the knockout stages behind Germany, and this match could prove decisive in the race between Emerse Fae's Ivory Coast and Sebastian Beccacece's well-drilled Ecuadorians. Ivory Coast head in after a strong stretch of form under Emerse Fae, with just five defeats in 25 matches since he took the job permanently, although the AFCON 2025 quarter-final exit to Egypt took some shine off the build-up. In my opinion the Premier League trio of Amad Diallo, Ibrahim Sangare and Evann Guessand is a difference-maker, and Yan Diomande and Bazoumana Toure offer real pace from the bench. Clement Akpa has been ruled out with injury and replaced by Christopher Operi. I expect Fae's side to dominate the midfield battle through Kessie and Sangare.

Ecuador

Under Sebastian Beccacece, Ecuador have lost only one of their last 18 matches and beat Saudi Arabia 2-1 in their first pre-tournament friendly on 31 May. From my point of view this is a tactically excellent side, with Moises Caicedo controlling the midfield and a defence built around Willian Pacho, Piero Hincapie and Joel Ordonez that is as good as any in South America. Captain Enner Valencia, at 36, is at his third World Cup and remains the focal point in attack. I expect a disciplined performance and a real chance of three points.

Predicted Lineup: Galindez; Ordonez, Pacho, Hincapie, Estupinan; Franco, Caicedo, Vite, Angulo; Plata, Valencia.

I see this as a tight tactical game between two well-drilled defensive sides, with Ecuador holding the edge through midfield control via Caicedo. Neither side will commit numbers forward without due care, and a single goal is likely to settle it. My forecast: Ivory Coast 0 Ecuador 1.

I am backing Under 2.5 Goals and my read on this is that both sides will set up to avoid losing the opener. Ecuador have kept goals down in nearly all their matches under Beccacece, while Ivory Coast were not prolific in AFCON 2025 either, scoring more than two goals only once in the knockout phase.
