Ecuador face group winners Germany at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Thursday evening, with kickoff at 22:00 CAT. Sitting on one point and yet to score, Ecuador have to win to have any chance of reaching the knockouts, while Germany have already topped the group and can afford to rest key men. Ecuador

Ecuador have been frustrating in attack, failing to score in either match and losing their opener to a last-minute Ivory Coast goal before a goalless draw with Curacao despite having an incredible 15 shots on target. In my opinion Sebastian Beccacece has a solid platform through Moises Caicedo and the centre back pairing of Willian Pacho and Piero Hincapie, but the final third remains a real problem. Enner Valencia carries their main hope of a goal and they will need him at his sharpest. My read on this is that they have to be more direct and get Plata and Yeboah running at a second string German defence.

Predicted Lineup: Galindez; Franco, Pacho, Hincapie; Estupinan, Alcivar, Vite, Caicedo, Yeboah; Plata, Valencia.

Germany

Germany have been the standout team in the group, hammering Curacao 7-1 before a comeback win over Ivory Coast that sealed top spot. With qualification secured, Julian Nagelsmann can rotate if he so desires and hand minutes to fringe players, which lowers the intensity they will bring. Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz remain capable of deciding any game if used, but I expect several regulars to be rested or eased in from the bench. From my point of view a much changed Germany will be comfortable but far less clinical than their thrashing of Curacao suggested.

Predicted Lineup: Neuer; Kimmich, Tah, Schlotterbeck, Rüdiger; Nmecha, Pavlovic, Musiala, Wirtz; Sane, Havertz.

Ecuador will pour forward chasing the win they need, and against a heavily rotated Germany I think they finally find the net. The issue is that opening up leaves gaps, and Germany have the individual class to punish them even with a changed eleven. I expect a tense draw that does little for Ecuador in the end. My forecast: Ecuador 1 Germany 1.

Under 2.5 Goals (1.96)

I am backing under 2.5 goals, and my read on this is that a rotated Germany that does not need to win will not chase the game while Ecuador have shown almost no attacking spark across two matches. Ecuador have failed to score at all so far and Germany are likely to manage their evening rather than push for goals. At 1.96 a low scoring game looks the value.
