Czech Republic and Mexico close out Group A at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Thursday morning, with kickoff at 03:00 CAT. Mexico are already through with two wins and can seal top spot with a draw, while the Czechs must win and even then rely on results elsewhere to advance out of the Group Stage. That gap in stakes should shape everything about how this game unfolds. For all our World Cup betting tips, head to our dedicated section.
Czech Republic vs Mexico Analysis
Czech Republic
The Czech Republic come into this with a single point and only a victory keeps them genuinely alive, so Ivan Hasek has no choice but to chase the game. In my opinion their best route is the counter through Patrik Schick and Adam Hlozek, the pairing that carries almost all of their goal-scoring threat. The worry is that committing forward against Mexico leaves space behind a back line that has already conceded three times. I expect plenty of Czech possession through the likes of Krejcik and Sadilek, but a lack of control once the game opens up.
Predicted Lineup: Kovar; Holes, Hranac, Krejci; Sadilek, Cerv, Darida, Coufal; Hlozek, Schick, Sojka.
Mexico
Mexico have been ruthless and efficient so far, beating South Africa and then edging South Korea through Luis Romo to take maximum points. Javier Aguirre is likely to freshen his side knowing a draw is enough to top the group, but the spine of Edson Alvarez and the threat of Raul Jimenez and Julian Quinones keep real quality on the pitch. From my point of view they will be content to control possession, manage the tempo, and punish the Czechs on the break. With qualification already secured there is little pressure on them and that calm should serve them well.
Predicted Lineup: Rangel; J. Sanchez, Alvarez, Vasquez, Gallardo; Lira; Romo, Gutierrez; Quinones, Jimenez, Alvarado.
Czech Republic vs Mexico Prediction
Mexico have looked the most complete side in the group and even a rotated lineup should carry too much for a Czech team forced to open up. I expect the Czechs to score as they push for the win they need, but Mexico to take control on the counter and see it out. My forecast: Czech Republic 1 Mexico 2.
Czech Republic vs Mexico Best Bet
BTTS: Yes (1.97)
I am backing both teams to score because the Czechs simply have to attack and that should open the game right up. Schick has the quality to trouble any defence, while Mexico carry a constant threat through Jimenez and co on the break. At 1.97 a goal at each end looks the smart play.
