Canada open their home World Cup against Bosnia-Herzegovina at BMO Field in Toronto on Friday 12 June, with kickoff at 21:00 CAT. Alphonso Davies leads a Canadian side strengthened by playing on home soil, while Edin Dzeko captains a Bosnian team appearing at their second ever World Cup. Betway price Canada as clear favourites, and I lean towards the hosts here as well. For all our World Cup betting tips, head to our dedicated section.
Canada vs Bosnia-Herzegovina Analysis
Canada
In my opinion, Canada have the advantage of home support and a stronger overall squad than at any previous tournament, with Jonathan David leading up front and Tajon Buchanan and Ismael Kone offering pace and dynamism through the middle. The big question is Alphonso Davies, who is recovering from a hamstring strain and likely to miss the opener, with Richie Laryea expected to deputise at left-back. Bombito and Cornelius give Marsch a settled centre-back pairing, and from my point of view the home crowd at BMO Field will give them an early edge. I think Canada will look to press high in a 4-4-2 and force Bosnia onto the back foot.
Predicted Lineup: St. Clair; Johnston, Bombito, Cornelius, Laryea; Buchanan, Kone, Eustaquio, Ahmed; David, Larin.
Bosnia-Herzegovina
Bosnia-Herzegovina arrive at their second World Cup with veteran captain Edin Dzeko still leading the line at 40, supported by Ermedin Demirovic and an experienced spine including Sead Kolasinac at left-back. From my point of view coach Sergej Barbarez will set them up to be compact in a 4-4-2, soak up Canadian pressure, and look to Dzeko in the box from set-pieces. They beat Wales and Italy in qualifying so this group should hold no fear, but the away setting against a confident host nation will be a different test. I think they will sit deep and try to nick a goal on the counter.
Predicted Lineup: Vasilj; Dedic, Katic, Muharemovic, Kolasinac; Bajraktarevic, Tahirovic, Sunjic, Memic; Dzeko, Demirovic.
Canada vs Bosnia-Herzegovina Prediction
Canada have the home crowd and the better squad balance, and with Jonathan David in good form have a more potent attack than their opponents. I expect Bosnia to defend deep and frustrate the hosts for a period, but Canada should eventually find a way through. My forecast: Canada 2 Bosnia-Herzegovina 0.
Canada vs Bosnia-Herzegovina Best Bet
BTTS: No at 1.73
I am backing Both Teams to Score: No and my reasoning for this is built on Bosnia's defensive setup. Barbarez will park his side in a compact 4-4-2 and feed Dzeko on the counter, which means very few clean attacking moves coming back the other way. Canada at the back are settled enough to keep Dzeko quiet for long periods, and I expect Bombito and Cornelius to hold up well. At 1.73 from Betway, BTTS: No reflects the 2-0 forecast and is the cleanest value on the card.
